UCPB Sustains Growth Momentum
hikes assets in Q1 of 2009 by 43% over Q1 of 2008
Riding on the momentum it built last year, UCPB posted double-digit growth in total assets in the first quarter of 2009.
Total assets of the bank reached P141.3 billion at the end of March 2009. This represents a P42.5-billion or 43% increase from the level in March 2008 of P98.8 billion.
The steady growth of deposits and loans during the period fueled the robust expansion of the bank’s assets.
The bank’s total deposits rose by P43 billion or 57% to P117.8 billion from P75.0 billion a year ago on account of the P4.5-billion increase in current accounts and savings accounts, the P4.6 billion increase in foreign currency deposits, the P3.6-billion increase in time deposits, and the P30 billion in new government deposits.
On the other hand, total loans hit P33.2 billion, 43% or about P10 billion higher than the P23.4 billion a year ago with both commercial loans and consumer loans

recording healthy growths. Commercial loans jumped by 53% or over P7 billion to P22.8 billion from P15.5 billion, while consumer loans increased by 47% or nearly P2 billion to P5.0 billion from P3.5 billion.
UCPB expects to be able to tap growth opportunities in the middle and consumer markets to keep the momentum going. The new government deposits and the conversion of the PDIC loans into Tier 1 capital-eligible capital notes have strengthened the bank’s competitive position. The loan conversion brought UCPB’s capital to P9.4 billion at the end of March 2009 and completed the bank’s capital raising program.
