UCPB Taps Thomson Reuters for Treasury System Upgrade

UCPB has engaged the services of leading global financial technology solutions provider Thomson Reuters to implement an integrated trade and risk management system to replace its Treasury Group's 10 application systems.

An integrated system will enable the bank's Treasury Group to manage its positions and risks on a single platform, and allow straight through processing of front to back treasury transactions.

The system upgrade will be completed by April 2009, UCPB executive vice president and treasurer Eulogio Catabran said.

"With the new treasury system, we can process our transactions more efficiently, manage our risks more effectively, continually monitor financial market trends and spot opportunities, " Mr. Catabran said.

UCPB formalized the agreement with Thomson Reuters at a signing ceremony held recently in the bank's corporate headquarters in Makati City.

Shown during the signing of the agreement are (seated from left) UCPB executive vice president for information technology Ramon Tañafranca and Mr. Catabran, Thomson Reuters country manager Milagros Matias and business development manager Craig Bennett. Also present were (standing from left) UCPB first vice president Melvin Guanzon, vice president Ma. Paz Cuevas and vice president Elizabeth Terrado, and Thomson Reuters project manager Edgar Angeles, operations, trade and risk management head for ASEAN and the Pacific Shabnam Suri and sales specialist Keith Poole.

CPB Supports BSP-DepEd Financial
Education Program

UCPB has sponsored the printing of 4,000 sets of teaching guides that will equip public elementary school mentors with tools to effectively teach grade 1 up to grade 6 pupils the basics of saving and money management.

The teaching guides will incorporate these lessons in three existing subject areas, namely: Edukasyong Pagpapakatao; Sibika at Kultura-Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika; and Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), with the assistance of the Department of Education (DepEd), developed the teaching guides under its “Financial Literacy Program”. The BSP program seeks to institutionalize financial education in public elementary schools to inculcate the values of saving and investing among the Filipino youth.

At the recent launching of the program, UCPB FVP Edmond Bernardo received from BSP Monetary Board member Vicente Valdepeñas, Jr. (3rd and 4th from left) one set of the teaching guides that the DepEd will distribute to public schools selected by the bank. With them are (from left): BSP director Fe de la Cruz, DepEd director Mari Paul Soriano and BSP assistant governor Ma. Dolores Yuvienco.

UCPB has been very active in helping upgrade the quality of education in public schools. Only recently, the bank, through the UCPB-CIIF Foundation, distributed beginning reading kits to 90 public schools in coconut communities to assist them in improving the reading and comprehension skills of their grade 1 schoolchildren.

UCPB-Quirino Highway's Service Impresses
Even Client's Representative

Quirino Highway Branch showed recently what differentiates UCPB's customer service from its peers and why many consider the bank as tops in customer service.

“…it is for me quite a surprise that I get great service even if I have limited interaction with the branch and it's not really a big account that my uncle has. In some banks, great service is limited to the valued clients who have big accounts,” Ms. Eleanor Cervantes said in a letter to the bank.

Ms. Cervantes was only asked by an uncle abroad to manage his account several years ago. She was not the actual client and yet the Quirino Branch associates were treating her like a valued client. This so impressed her that she took the time to write a glowing commendation letter.

Two UCPB Executives Pass CISA Examination

Information Technology and Methods Group's head for information security, Joey Regala, and Internal Audit Division's head for information systems audit, Lilia Diokno, hurdled recently the tough Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) examination.

Passing the CISA examination is the first step towards obtaining a CISA certification. The CISA program is the globally accepted standard of achievement for professionals in the fields of information systems (IS) audit, control and security. A CISA certification affirms an IS professional's high level of skill, judgment and proficiency in these fields. Such expertise have become increasingly vital to businesses given the changing nature of information technology.

Currently, there are more than 60,000 professionals worldwide who have earned the CISA credential. Mr. Regala and Ms. Diokno, both certified public accountants (CPA), are the first UCPB associates to take the CISA examination given by Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).

ISACA is recognized worldwide as the leading professional organization in IT governance, control, security and assurance. With 175 chapters in 70 countries, it provides information and technical guidance to IS professionals.

Important-Notice

OUR APOLOGIES
for the intermittent
ATM and electronic banking services

We apologize for the intermittent service that you are experiencing with our ATMs and other electronic banking channels. This is regrettable, but unfortunately unavoidable.

As we had informed you, we switched recently to a new Z/OS mainframe, one of IBM's latest equipment. Technical issues usually crop up during such switchover because the systems will be running on a new environment. This is what is causing the service interruption.

We are addressing these issues. It will, however, take a little more time for our electronic banking systems to fully stabilize in the new environment so it is possible that some service interruption will continue to occur.

We have a dedicated team of information technology specialists continuously fine-tuning our systems, and monitoring them round the clock so that we can respond quickly to any downtime.

We deeply regret the inconvenience you are going through. Again, please accept our apologies.
